Teaching Experience

“Her class made me feel like my voice matters.”

– student evaluation

My teaching experience includes working in the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University -New Brunswick and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Rutgers – Newark. I have taught and developed multiple courses in the fields of Sociology/ Anthropology and LatinX Studies, including Migration, Diaspora, and (Im)mobilities, Indigenous Latinos, and Latinas, Migration, Family and Work (inspired originally by Carmen Whalen).

As a teacher-scholar, I have three primary goals: to further develop student problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; to challenge students to reflect on social realities beyond the scope of their personal experiences; and to enhance learning through active and collaborative participation in research and community-based projects.

Apart from university courses, I have also taught:

Bilingual Spanish/Kichwa High School, Ecuador
Anthropology and Cultural Documentation course – with the creation of an archive of oral histories, photo stories, and maps of significance.

Migrant Outreach Program, Board of Cooperative Educational Services, New York
Summer Program – ESL Instructor for Migrant Families
